Step 1: Work out where the slowness is
- One or two workstations slow, the rest fine: the problem is on those computers or their connection.
- Every workstation slow, all day: the server, the network, or the Dentrix database.
- Every workstation slow at certain times: something scheduled is running, such as a backup, a database export, antivirus scans or Windows updates.
- Only one module slow, such as Chart or the Document Center: note which one. It points to particular files or settings.
Common causes on workstations
Henry Schein One’s 2026 requirements call for Windows 10 or 11 workstations with at least 8 GB of memory (16 GB recommended), a 4-core processor, solid-state storage (SSD or NVMe) and a 1 Gbps network connection. Slow workstations usually miss one of those:- A spinning hard drive instead of an SSD.
- Not enough memory, especially with imaging, a browser and email open too.
- Wi-Fi instead of a wired connection. Henry Schein One says wireless networks are used at your own risk because of interference from X-ray machines and other devices.
- Antivirus scanning Dentrix files every time they are read. Henry Schein One points to the Dentrix Resource Center for the correct exclusions.
- Network card power saving. Henry Schein One recommends disabling power management on network cards to avoid disconnects.
- Windows 10. Microsoft’s support ended in October 2025, and Henry Schein One says it will no longer support installing Dentrix on Windows 10 after June 30, 2026.
Common causes on the server and network
- Low disk space. Henry Schein One recommends more than 10 percent free space on all drives.
- An undersized or ageing server. The 2026 requirements list Windows Server 2016 to 2025, 16 GB of memory (more for over 10 workstations), a 4-core processor and SSD or NVMe storage.
- Database exports and backups during the day. Dentrix’s own backup guidance has you schedule database exports with the Server Administration Utility. If that or the backup runs during office hours, everyone feels it.
- An old or faulty network switch, or a damaged cable between the switch and the server.
How to fix it
Warning: changes to antivirus exclusions, server settings, scheduled exports or backups should be made by your IT provider. Getting antivirus exclusions wrong can leave computers unprotected, and moving backups without checking the export schedule can leave you without a usable backup.
- Restart the slow workstation and test again before anything else.
- Check the workstation against Henry Schein One’s current requirements, especially SSD, memory and Windows version.
- If it is on Wi-Fi, move it to a wired connection and compare.
- Ask IT to check antivirus exclusions against the Dentrix Resource Center and to disable network card power saving.
- If every workstation is slow, ask IT to check server disk space, memory use and the network switch.
- Check when database exports, backups and scans run, and move them outside office hours, keeping the export before the backup.
- If the server or workstations are below requirements, plan replacements rather than keep patching.
